The Fight for Carlos Marches On

The G.I. GO Fund attended a rally for US Marine Reservist Carlos Gonzalez, whose set to be laid off from the
Perth Amboy Fire Department due to budget cuts.
The silent walk ironically took place on the same day the
city celebrated the 125th anniversary of the Perth Amboy
Fire Department. The walk was organized by Gonzalez’s
family, led by his sister Egnita Santana, who felt that the
firing of her brother, a soldier fighting in Iraq, was nothing
to be celebrated.
“How can the city celebrate the 125th anniversary when
people are losing their jobs?” she asked.
Among those who attended the rally was George Lisicki,
Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief for the national VFW,
who provided the rally with obvious expertise and
experience in providing assistance and aid to our veterans.
Lisicki, a Vietnam War veteran himself, said that this
country cannot allow soldiers like Carlos to fight in Iraq for
a year only to come home unemployed. He added that he did not want to see a fellow soldier have to deal with
losing his job when he needs to keep his mind on fighting America’s enemies.
G.I. GO attended the walk in an effort to encourage Gonzalez’s family and all those concerned for him that
firing man who is still overseas must not occur. G.I. Go President Jack Fanous said that firing a soldier on
active duty will not only affect Carlos, but it could affect future enlistment.
“Saving Carlos’ job is not only important in ensuring that our heroes are treated as such,” he said, “but also to
show those interested in enlisting not to be discouraged from doing so out of fear they may lose their jobs. It is
a tremendous sacrifice for someone to fight in a war, one that only a select few in this country are willing to
make. How can we ask for people to volunteer in battle if we cannot even give these brave men the security of
their own jobs?”
Fanous also vowed to get the support of state assemblymen and senators to ensure that the legislation will be
passed.
“This is not just a Perth Amboy issue but in fact a matter of national security, and the sooner we realize this,
the better off we’ll be,” he added.
