The New Jersey State Assembly passed BILL NO: A3622 with a unanimous 76-0 vote count. The
bill will now go to the State Senate for approval. If passed in the senate, it will then go to Governor
Corzine’s desk, who will decide if it should become state law.
“I am very proud of the assembly’s resounding choice to support our military,” said G.I. GO Vice
President Alexander Manis. “They displayed a great measure of patriotism today by putting politics
aside to unanimously pass this bill for our troops.”
Along with this bill, nine other bills concerning our soldiers passed through the assembly, including
the establishment of a Commission on Women Veterans.
BILL NO: A3622, which prevents any employer from firing or laying off an employee while on active
duty in the military, was first introduced in October when Perth Amboy Firefighter Carlos Gonzalez
was in jeopardy of being laid off while deployed in Iraq. Mayor Joseph Vas presented the bill to the
assembly after resounding opposition to Carlos’ situation, which included over a thousand
signatures from members of the community.
“Today was a monumental step in our quest to turn this bill into New Jersey and Federal law,” said
G.I. GO President Jack Fanous. “I urge the State Senate to pass this bill with the same urgency
that the Assembly displayed so it can become a law that may help our brave men and women.”
