G.I. GO President Jack Fanous Addresses Veterans at POW/MIA Ceremony

With thousands of our troops fighting for us halfway around the world, proud veterans and grateful civilians
gathered to honor and commemorate those who endured the most for our country.
The G.I. GO Fund participated in an event remembering the millions of military men and women who have
given everything in the service of this nation. The POW/MIA Recognition Day, held at the Department of
Veterans Affairs in East Orange, NJ, featured speakers wishing to pay their respects to our greatest heroes.
“We all know that none of us would ever live in freedom without your dedication and the commitment made by
all of our servicemen and women we have here today in the audience,” said G.I. GO President Jack Fanous as
he addressed the crowd. “Americans can never thank you enough, but we will all certainly try.”
He continued, “Our history books might tell us that World War II ended in 1945, or that the Korean conflict
came to a close in 1953, and that the last soldier came home from Vietnam in 1975. But for the families of our
POWs and MIAs, the wars go on and on and on”
Along with Mr. Fanous, Col. Douglass Anderson of the McGuire Air Force Base addressed the crowd,
reminding everyone of the bravery and courage it takes to be a soldier.
“When the tragedies of 9/11 unfolded, there were many Americans saying to themselves ‘thank God I was not
on that plane.’ Then there were those [who would become our soldiers], who said, ‘dear God, I wish I was on
that plane, maybe I could have made a difference,” he said.
The Colonel added that “our POWs and MIAs chose to serve this country, and they still do.”
Many in the crowd were moved to tears throughout the event, as they were the family members or fellow
comrades of soldiers who would not make it back to the country they left to protect. But as difficult as it is to
relive the loss of a loved one, they were proud to see others standing beside them and remembering with them.
“It was very nice to have so many people in attendance. I was touched to hear the many kind words said here
at this event.” said one veteran who attended the ceremony.
All of us here at G.I. GO want to offer our heartfelt condolences and gratitude to those who have lost their
loved ones, and we wish for the safe return for those who are still in captivity or missing overseas.
